A Father's Sea
Aegeus watched from the cliffs of Sounion for his son Theseus’s return from Crete. The agreement was simple: white sails if the ship came back victorious, black if Theseus had died. Flushed with triumph, Theseus forgot to change them. The ship that appeared on the horizon still flew black. Believing his son lost, Aegeus threw himself into the water below. The sea has carried his name ever since — every wave an echo of a promise left unkept.
This chess set carries that same stillness onto a board. In our Istanbul atelier, each piece is shaped by investment casting, the method inherited from the bronze-workers of the ancient Aegean world: wax model, refractory mould, then stainless steel poured at high heat. Surfaces are hand-finished; no piece reaches its box without a final inspection.
The board is cut from a single block of marble brought to the workshop, its veining echoing that sea’s own waves. The pieces are weighted to be felt in the hand, and even unplayed, the set becomes the quiet centre of a shelf — like that horizon line, forever waiting for a return.
