The Symposium's Host
In ancient Greece, the symposion was never just a drinking party — it was a ritual where philosophy, poetry, and friendship sat down together at the table. A symposiarch, the master of the evening, decided how much the wine would be diluted and where the conversation would go. A good host was quiet enough that guests never noticed him, yet attentive enough to shape every moment of the night.
This gentleman’s bust brings that quiet authority back to the table. In our atelier the figure is produced by investment casting: every detail, from the curl of the moustache to the cut of the collar, travels from a hand-shaped wax model to a refractory mould, then into stainless steel. The surface is hand-finished, and the character’s expression survives intact.
One end cleans your pipe; the tamper at the other presses the tobacco down. Twelve centimetres long, it sits in a pocket or on a table with the same quiet elegance. On a modern table, a single object that remembers the old symposion’s unspoken order.
